About Me

The Alchemist: A Short Summary & Book Review

I had read ‘The Alchemist’ in the year 2017 and this was the first book I had ever read outside of my regular course books. Ever since I have read this short novel, I fell in love with reading and afterward I read a slew of English fictional books and novels.

Before I start writing the review of the masterpiece The Alchemist, I would like to mention a few quotations from the book that would actually serve as an appetizer and would definitely incite you to go and buy this asset. Moreover, these quotes would make it pretty clear for you what exactly this novel is all about.

Quotations from the novel ‘The Al-chemist’

  • "There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.”
  • “Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity.”
  • “And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

Review of ‘The Alchemist’:

Alchemist is a short fictional novel of around 167 pages, written by a Brazilian author Paulo Coelho in 1988. The book is full of inspiring and motivational quotations, wisdom and philosophy, and life lessons. Basically, this book sheds light on the importance of the journey and struggle in life in order to achieve the life goals and objectives despite the limited resources we have. Moreover, we find the ways of nature, how it helps us in reaching our goals by placing various signs and signals in our way; all these signs serve us in understanding the right direction in life and to carry on the journey.

The book lays emphasis on the importance of optimism, faith, and continuous struggle in the face of all the odds in life. This novel is actually a sort of motivational and self-help book that would help us re-igniting the extinguished spark within.

The novel is about a young shepherd boy ‘Santiago’ from Spain, who sees the same dream several times about the treasures lying in the Pyramids of Egypt. So he embarks upon his journey to go to Egypt and find those hidden treasures.

The novel is rich in his interesting various encounters with different people, all of whom points Santiago in the direction of his quest without actually knowing about the treasure. There are a plethora of awe-inspiring events and twists in the story. In short, the journey that actually started with the ambition of finding some worldly treasure ended up in finding the hidden treasure in his own-self.

Thus, Santiago, the main character and the protagonist of this compelling story, represents an ordinary man who has to go through life long struggles to reach his ultimate destination.

My Comments

The Alchemist is one of the highly recommended books especially if you are just starting to develop a taste in fictional books. Written in a very simple language, this book is easily understandable by a person of any age group.

So, just grab one copy and enjoy the ventures by a boy 'Santiago' who is apparently just like you but might be different on the basis of will-power and determination.
