70 Major Sins in Islam

The following are the 70 major sins strictly prohibited in Islam and admonished by Allah in the Holy Qur’an and by Prophet (PBUH). Allah has associated strict punishment for these sins.

1. Shirk – Associating Partners with Allah

Shirk is the first major sin in Islam. This is completely an unpardonable sin in Islam.

As Allah says in Qur’an;

Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him. But He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills. And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.

Al-Qur’an (4:48)

2. Committing Murder

Islam strictly prohibits unlawful murder. Killing a human being is akin to killing the whole of humanity in the sight of Islam.

Allah says in Qur’an;

And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden (to be killed) except by right. And do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty.

Al-Qur’an (25:68)

3. Practising Black Magic

Those who practice black magic and inflict harm on others will find their place in hell.

According to Qur’an;

And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.

Al-Qur’an (2:102)

4. Not Performing the Prayers

Prayer is one of the five pillars of Islam. According to a Hadith, prayer differentiates between believers and non-believers.

So, those who do not perform prayer cannot claim to be Muslims.

But there came after them successors who neglected prayer and pursued desires, so they are going to meet evil.

Al-Qur’an (19:59)

5. Withholding the Zakat (Charity)

Zakat is the fifth pillar of Islam. Zakat is mentioned along with Salat (prayer) in 30 verses of the Quran.

And let not those who (greedily) withhold what Allah has given them of his bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled with what they withheld on the day of resurrection.

Al-Qur’an (3:180)

6. Not Fasting In Ramadan (Without Excuse)

Fasting is the third pillar of Islam. Fasting in the month of Ramadan is “Farz” for every mature Muslim (men and women). However, one can leave fasting on the day for valid reasons mentioned in Qur’an.

O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may develop God-consciousness.

Quran 2:183

7. Not Performing Hajj while being able to do so

Hajj is the fourth pillar of Islam.

O people! Hajj (pilgrimage to the House of Allah) has been made incumbent upon you, so perform Hajj.

Hadith [Book 10, Hadith 2]

8. Disobeying or Disrespecting Parents

Qur’an Kareem has special instructions on how to treat parents. Crossing the limits will have severe consequences in the hereafter.

And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment, whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you. Say not to them [so much as] “uff”, and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small”.

Al-Qur’an

9. Cutting off the Ties of Relationships

Islam is strictly against those who sever ties with their relatives. In Qur’an, Allah SWT says;

So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on Earth and sever your [ties of] relationship? Those [who do so] are the ones that Allah has cursed. So He deafened them and blinded their vision.

Al-Qur’an (47:22-23)

10. Committing Adultery or Fornication

Unlawful sexual intercourse has severe punishment in this world as well as in the hereafter.

And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.

Al-Qur’an (17:32)

11. Committing Sodomy

Islam strictly prohibits sodomy in any case. Those who commit sodomy will meet the wrath of Allah on the day of judgment.

Allah will not look at a person [with pleasure] who commits sodomy with a man or a woman.

Hadith Sahih Al-Jami # 7678

12. Taking or Paying Interest (Riba)

Interest is something that Allah has openly declared war for. People who deal in interest actually fight a war with Allah.

Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the day of resurrection] except as one who stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, “Trade is [just] like interest”. But Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. So, whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past and his affair rests with Allah. But whoever returns to dealing in interest or usury, those are the companions of the fire. They will abide eternally therein.

Al-Qur’an (2:275)

And whoever turns his back to them on such a day unless swerving [as a strategy] for war or joining [another] company, has certainly returned with anger [upon him] from Allah. And his refuge is Hell – and wretched is the destination.

Al-Qur’an (8:16)

16. The Unjust Leader

Islam never condones injustice. And especially when it is the person in power who commits injustice, he is committing a grave sin and will be severely punished in the hereafter.

The cause is only against the ones who wrong the people and tyrannize upon the Earth without right. Those will have a painful punishment.

Al-Qur’an (42:42)

19. Intoxicants (Alcohol & Drugs)

Al-Qur’an (24:23)

22. Stealing from the Exploits of War & from the Money of Zakat

Another major sin is stealing from the exploits of wars or from the money collected from Zakat.

It is not [attributable] to any Prophet that he would act unfaithfully [in regard to war booty]. And whoever betrays [taking unlawfully] will come with what he took on the day of resurrection. Then will every soul be [fully] compensated for what it earned. And they will not be wronged.

Al-Qur’an (3:161)

23. Consuming Forbidden Wealth

These people will take from his good deeds. If his good deeds are thereby exhausted, he will be given their sins and then he will be thrown into the hell-fire.

28. Stealing

Stealing, theft, and robbery are the same kind of sins and the same kind of punishments are inflicted on the criminals to set an example.

As for the thief, the male and the female, amputate their hands in recompense for what they committed as a deterrent [punishment] from Allah. And Allah is exalted in might and wise. But whoever repents after his wrongdoing and reforms, indeed, Allah will turn to him in forgiveness. Indeed, Allah is forgiving and merciful.

Suicide is also a major sin in Islam. Islam never allows taking one’s own life.
