The literal meaning of ‘Al Qunoot’ in the Arabic language is ‘Al Dua’. It also means, ‘humility, humbleness, and serenity’. In addition, it also means ‘obedience’. Dua e Qunoot is a prayer that is recited in the last Rakat of Witr during the Isha prayer. Muslims say this prayer before going to Ruku.
It is reported that Hazrat Imam Hasan ibn Ali (RA) said ‘My Grand Father, the Prophet (PBUH), has taught me Dua-e-Qunoot to say it in Witr Prayer.
According to Hazrat Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (RA) and Hazrat Imam Shafi (RA), Qunoot in Witr prayer is mere Sunnah. So, if a person doesn’t recite it, his Witr prayer is still valid according to these schools of thought. Moreover, if someone does not know this prayer; he/she can recite any prayer in its place to fulfill the Sunnah.
According to Ehl e Hadith, it is a wajib prayer. Hence, if a person forgets to recite it in Water’s prayer, he has to perform Sajda-e-Sahw in order to make up for the lost wajib.
