A candidate has to give 12 papers in the written part of the Central Superior Services (CSS) Exam. Each paper is of 100 marks. Out of these 12 papers, 6 papers are compulsory subjects; while the other 6 are optional subjects. A candidate has to choose six optional subjects for a total of 600 marks. CSS Optional Subjects Lists
FPSC has arranged the choices for the optional subjects in 07 groups. A candidate has to choose only 1 subject from one group. Moreover, he doesn’t necessarily choose a subject from all the groups. He just has to make a total of 600 marks from his choice of optional subjects.

Subjects with 200 marks are basically of two papers; Paper I & II that are taken separately.
A candidate has to obtain 40 percent marks in the compulsory subjects individually, and 33 percent marks in each optional subject to clear the CSS written exam. Moreover, he has to obtain 600 marks in aggregate out of 1200 marks.
